Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation Project in Morogoro, Tanzania
Project Summary: Morogoro, Tanzania, faces severe environmental degradation, threatening its rich biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities. This project will address biodiversity loss through a comprehensive plan targeting restoration, conservation, and community awareness. With a funding prize of $25,000, the project will implement five key initiatives across 40 villages in Morogoro, engaging schools, communities, and local authorities to restore ecosystems and foster sustainable practices. This initiative will directly contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 (Climate Action), 15 (Life on Land), and 4 (Quality Education).
Key Initiatives:
Community-Led Reforestation: This initiative will focus on planting 200,000 native trees across 40 villages in Morogoro. By engaging local communities, schools, and cooperatives, the project will restore deforested areas, improve soil fertility, and increase carbon sequestration. Training workshops will equip participants with knowledge on tree care and sustainable land use, ensuring long-term benefits. The reforestation effort aims to remove approximately 2,500 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
Agroforestry Systems: The project will introduce agroforestry practices in 25 villages, combining tree planting with agricultural crops. This system will enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and increase agricultural yields. Farmers will be trained on integrating high-value trees, such as fruit and nut species, into their farms. Agroforestry will provide food security, diversify incomes, and reduce pressure on natural forests.
